Kids are out of school, and the business of summer is setting in. More kids will be on our area street, and may not be paying attention to traffic. Accidents can and do happen in the blink of an eye. The Williston Police Department is hosting a bike safety rodeo tonight at the Raymond Family Community Center in Williston from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm.

Some things that will be covered at tonights event include:

  1. The importance of wearing a helmet: Staff will emphasize the importance of wearing a helmet every time your child rides a bike. A properly fitted helmet can significantly reduce the risk of head injuries in case of a fall or collision. It will be stressed the helmet sits level on the head, with the straps securely fastened.
  2. Why you should check the bike: Parents and kids should perform regular bike maintenance checks to ensure it is in good working condition. Check the brakes, tires, and gears. Make sure the seat is adjusted appropriately for your child's height, allowing them to touch the ground with both feet when seated.
  3. Kids can start to earn traffic rules: This is a big one for all of us! This rodeo will teach your child the basic traffic rules and road signs. They should understand the importance of stopping at stop signs, looking both ways before crossing intersections, and using hand signals to indicate turns.
  4. Why being visible is important: We never think about this. Outfit your child's bike with reflectors and ensure they wear brightly colored clothing. Equip the bike with front and rear lights if they will be riding during dawn, dusk, or in low-light conditions.

Bring your bike and learn about bike safety as we kick off summer break! Jer Bear's will be there selling shaved ice and the Williston Police Department will have prizes for giveaway!

The Williston Police Department will also have free helmets for children that do not have a helmet! We will be indoors, so the event will happen rain or shine! Enter through the west garage door.
