Today is the day set aside citizens take the lead to show support on National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day.

Every rank and file member of law enforcement has chosen a career that requires them to risk their lives every day in the service of their communities. They have responded to a difficult and frequently unappreciated call to public service.

Their responsibilities are commanded by the local, state, and federal levels. Each officer spends a lot of time away from their family and are frequently given thankless and sometimes unpleasant tasks. They seldom ever know what their days would bring. Frequently, a community's only paid emergency resource is police enforcement. To make neighborhoods safer, they frequently collaborate with other local, state, and federal organizations.

How to observe National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day may be on your mind today. Thank your local, county, or state police force in writing. To express your support, wear blue, make your social media accounts blue, or illuminate your porch with a blue light. Use the hashtag #NationalLawEnforcementAppreciationDay to show your support on social media. Law enforcement professionals are present throughout our area communities – the gas station, the coffee shop, the grocery store. Don’t be shy. Thank them. In some coffee shops, for example, patrons may pay for an officers’ caffeine-fix. Now, doing their duty may be all the thanks they need, as they often say, but that should not be enough for us. Gratitude and appreciation for these individuals is what makes us a better community and increases our connections to one another.

It’s easy to lump all of law enforcement into people in uniforms with badges, but there is a lot more to the field than that. Do not lose track of the fact that there is more behind the badge. 911 dispatchers, correctional officers, police, state troopers, sheriff's department officials and detectives...even federal officers.  They all serve, and every one of them deserve a simple thank you.
