It seems like we just got done wrapping presents, and getting things finalized for the stockings. Now, we are knee-deep in February, and Valentine's Day is coming up fast. Where did the time go? If you have not got the plan set for Valentine's Day, you still have a few days. Let's start with candy. Where do we even start? Candystore.com is a great website that looks at each state, and what residents like when it comes to candy. We used them to look at Halloween candy trends a few months back, and now we will see what the top Valentine's Day candy is for our area.

Montana

The Treasure State is pretty traditional when it comes to candy. For 2023, our friends to the west favored chocolate hearts. Conversation hearts came in second, and the heart-shaped box of chocolates came in third.

Minnesota

Surprisingly, lutefisk didn't make this year's list.  For 2023, our friends to the east favored the heart-shaped box of chocolates, followed by M&Ms's and conversation hearts in that order.

North Dakota

Finally, we look at North Dakota. We are pretty traditional too. For 2023, we favor M&M's for the Valentine's Day sweet tooth. Conversation hearts came in second, and the heart-shaped box of chocolates came in third.

Some honorable mentions for some additional suggestions include candy necklaces (Alamaba), Cupid Corn (Michigan & Nebraska), and chocolate roses (Wyoming).

Here are a few Valentine's Day quick facts.

  • 58 million pounds of chocolate are bought during Valentine's Day week.
  • The peak selling period for conversation hearts is only 6 weeks long. Wow!
  • It takes manufacturers 11 months to produce enough for those 6 weeks.
  • The most popular Valentine’s Day color is red.
  • The average American spends $144.56 on Valentine’s Day candy.
  • Each year, an estimated 1 billion cards are exchanged on Valentine's Day.
