Williston Curling Club slides into fun

It can be hard to find things to do during the winter.  Curling is a fun option you may want to consider trying. It's a winter sport that has lot of participation in Williston. Curling is a strategic team sport where typically, four players from one team play against four players from the opposing team. The goal of the game is to have more points than the opposing team. Scoring is done by sliding a curling stone on a sheet of ice onto a marked surface.

If you've ever wanted to try your hand at curling, The Williston Basin Curling Club currently has three nights of league Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. The league starts the week after Thanksgiving and ends in March a week before Spring Break. The curling club even has a program for kids each year in conjunction with Williston Parks and Recreation.

Williston Basin Curling Club is getting ready to host their second bonspiel event of the year. Their February Bonspiel is Friday the 24 to Sunday the 26 (depending how many teams are signed up). It's an open format tournament. Three games guaranteed. Must be a 4-person team, any combination of men and women. People from in town and out of town show up. Most people who participate have played before, but even beginners are welcome. According to WBCC president Travis Kitchens, "every year there's a team of those who have not played or have not played much. They're just looking to have some fun."

The cost is $160 for a team with a meal included. To register email willistoncurling@gmail.com. Registration is open to sixteen teams. And it's free to come and watch in person. Go to Building B at the Williston Upper Missouri Valley Fairgrounds.

But the fun doesn't end there, the Williston Basin Curling Club will be hosting the ND State High School Championships the first weekend in March. Players will range in age from 10 to 18 years old.
