Before you head out for the Band Day parade on Saturday, there is a simple act you can do to help people in our community. Every year, the US Postal Service (USPS) sponsors a food drive called "Stamp Out Hunger" to alleviate hunger in communities across the country. This event, which is this Saturday, is the largest one-day food drive in the country.

The Stamp Out Hunger food drive was founded in 1993 by a USPS employee in Arizona who identified a need for a means to aid local food banks. The practice immediately caught on, and postal carriers now collect non-perishable food items left by consumers at their mailboxes every year. The food is subsequently distributed to local food banks and charities.

The National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC), the AFL-CIO, and Feeding America, a nationwide network of food banks, are all supporting the event. Despite the challenges of the COVID-19 epidemic, the Stamp Out Hunger food drive collected more than 70 million pounds of food across the country in 2020.

It is simple to participate in the food drive. Residents simply put non-perishable food items beside their mailboxes for our postal carriers to pick up on the day of the event. Canned products, boxed pasta, and cereal are examples of non-perishable food items. Donations are given to local food banks and pantries, which use them to support those in need.
